Mobil Centaur XHP 462 is a super-premium NLGI 2 calcium sulfonate complex grease — where the thickener itself carries both inherent extreme pressure and inherent rust protection properties, eliminating reliance on conventional EP additive chemistry that degrades in the presence of water.
Unlike conventional soap-base thickeners (lithium, aluminium, calcium soaps), the calcium sulfonate thickener in Mobil Centaur XHP 462 excels in water-saturated environments — maintaining thickener consistency, EP protection and rust resistance even with high levels of water contamination. This is the fundamental advantage in steel mill continuous casters, hot rolling work roll bearings and paper mill environments where conventional greases fail rapidly under combined water and heavy load conditions.
Product Overview
Mobil Centaur XHP™ 462 is the NLGI 2 grade in ExxonMobil's premium Centaur XHP 460 Series — a super-premium multipurpose calcium sulfonate complex grease specifically formulated for the most demanding steel mill and paper mill applications where the combination of heavy loading, shock loads, high operating temperatures and constant water contamination defeats conventional grease technology.
The calcium sulfonate thickener technology delivers inherent EP performance (400 kg four-ball weld point) and inherent rust protection — both properties built into the thickener itself rather than dependent on additive packages that can be washed out or degrade under water contamination. The ability to absorb free water without losing thickener consistency is the defining performance characteristic that makes Centaur XHP 462 the correct specification for continuous casters, hot rolling work roll bearings, roll necks and paper machine rolls.
Important note on application: Calcium sulfonate technology can, in some cases, increase tendency towards skid smear wear in rolling element bearings under light loading, grease overpack or frequent speed changes. Performance Benefits
Inherent EP — 400 kg Weld Point
EP properties are inherent to the calcium sulfonate thickener — not dependent on conventional EP additive packages. Four-ball weld point of 400 kg provides outstanding protection for heavily loaded bearings under shock loads in continuous casters and hot rolling mill equipment.
Absorbs Free Water Without Losing Consistency
The calcium sulfonate thickener absorbs free water and maintains thickener consistency even under high levels of water contamination — the critical capability in continuous casters and paper machine environments where water contamination is continuous and unavoidable.
High Temperature Operation — to 232°C
Reliable bearing lubrication for operations up to 232°C with proper regreasing intervals. 275°C dropping point ensures the grease maintains structural integrity at the elevated temperatures of hot rolling mill work roll bearings and other high-temperature steel mill applications.
Excellent High-Temperature Oil Bleed Control
Advanced polymer additive package provides excellent high-temperature oil bleed control — ensuring consistent base oil release to the bearing surface without excessive oil loss that reduces bearing protection and contaminates the operating environment.
Water Washout & Spray-Off Resistance
Water washout loss of 0.5 wt% and water spray-off loss of 20% — outstanding resistance to both water washout and spray-off in the continuously wet environments of paper machine rolls, couch rolls, press rolls and breast rolls.
Extended Relubrication Intervals
Extended regreasing intervals reduce grease consumption and maintenance frequency — meaningful cost and downtime savings in steel and paper mill environments where bearing relubrication requires equipment shutdown and is a significant planned maintenance cost.
Recommended Applications
Steel Mill — Continuous Casters
Ladle turret bearings, continuous caster bearings, hot rolling work roll bearings and roll necks — the primary design applications where the combination of water contamination, heavy loading and high temperature requires calcium sulfonate grease performance.
Paper Mill Equipment
Couch rolls, press rolls and breast rolls in paper machine environments — where constant water spray, heavy loading and the need for extended relubrication intervals make calcium sulfonate technology the correct choice over conventional lithium or lithium complex greases.
Wood Pellet Mill Equipment
Wood pellet mill roll bearings — where high operating temperatures, contamination and heavy loading combine to challenge conventional grease technology. Recommended by ExxonMobil for pellet mill roll bearing applications.
Wet Industrial Applications
Any heavily loaded industrial bearing application in a water-saturated environment where conventional grease technology is failing due to water washout, water contamination of the EP additive package, or corrosion between relubrication intervals.
