API Gear Oil Classifications

Automotive gear oils for vehicle axles and manual gearboxes are classified by the API GL system. Check your OEM manual before selecting a product.

API Grade	Application	Typical Use
API GL-4	Hypoid gears, moderate speed and torque, manual gearboxes and transaxles	Passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, many European OEM gearboxes
API GL-5	Hypoid gears, high-speed shock load and low-speed high-torque, heavy-duty axles and final drives	Mining haul trucks, heavy commercial vehicles, off-highway construction and agricultural equipment
API MT-1	Non-synchronised heavy-duty manual transmissions	Heavy truck gearboxes, often specified alongside GL-5 for rear axles

GL-4 and GL-5

GL-5 contains higher EP additives than GL-4. In manual gearboxes with brass or bronze synchronisers, GL-5 can affect gear change and cause damage. Follow your OEM specification, and do not substitute GL-5 for GL-4 without OEM approval.

FAQ

Can I use GL-5 gear oil where GL-4 is specified?

Not always. GL-5 contains higher EP additives than GL-4 and can affect brass or bronze synchronisers in manual gearboxes. Follow your OEM specification.

What is Allison TES-295?

TES-295 is Allison's synthetic ATF specification for newer automatic transmissions. TES-468 is a later version of the same standard. Mobiltrans HD 30 and 50 meet Allison C-4 only. Check your transmission data plate to confirm which specification applies.
