Product Overview
Mobilube™ HD 85W-140 is a high-performance heavy-duty gear lubricant formulated from high-performance base oils and an advanced additive system — engineered for high-load, high-temperature hypoid axles, final drives and manual transmissions. The heavier SAE 85W-140 viscosity grade is specified where maximum film thickness at elevated operating temperatures is required — heavy towing, fully loaded haul trucks, high-torque drawbar applications and any axle running consistently hot under sustained high load.
Delivers excellent chemical and thermal stability at elevated operating temperatures, outstanding EP protection under shock loading and excellent rust and corrosion protection in wet operating conditions. Approved by ZF, Meritor, Dana Spicer and Mack. Meets MIL-PRF-2105E. Available in 20L and 208L drum from Orbit Industrial — Genuine Mobil Lubricants Distributor, South Africa.
85W-140 vs 80W-90 — When to Specify Each Grade
Always confirm grade from your OEM handbook — contact Orbit Industrial for application-specific grade selection assistance
Specify 85W-140 when:
· OEM specifies SAE 85W-140 or 90 grade
· Heavy towing or drawbar applications
· Fully loaded haul trucks in high ambient temperatures
· High-torque low-speed applications requiring maximum film thickness
· Axles running consistently hot under sustained high load
Specify 80W-90 when:
· OEM specifies SAE 80W-90 grade
· General on-highway and off-highway API GL-5 applications
· Mixed temperature range operations
· Lighter vehicle axles and final drives
· Standard fleet and agricultural equipment maintenance

Performance Benefits
Maximum Film Thickness at High Temperature
SAE 85W-140 delivers maximum film thickness at elevated axle temperatures — the correct grade for haul truck final drives and heavily loaded towing axles where sustained high load and ambient temperature push sump temperatures beyond what 80W-90 can protect.
Outstanding EP Protection Under Extreme Pressure
Advanced EP additive system protects hypoid gear teeth under the three critical loading conditions — high-speed/shock load, high-speed/low-torque and low-speed/high-torque — that cause premature gear wear and failure in under-specified gear lubricants.
Excellent Chemical & Thermal Stability
Maintains oil integrity at the elevated bulk oil temperatures encountered in heavily loaded haul truck final drives and drawbar towing axles — resisting oxidation, deposit formation and viscosity increase under sustained maximum-load operating conditions.
Outstanding Rust & Corrosion Protection
Demonstrated excellent rust protection in water-contaminated and wet operating conditions — protecting axle and final drive components from corrosive wear in wet haul road environments, high humidity coastal mining sites and agricultural operations.
Cost-Effective Mineral Performance
Delivers reliable API GL-5 performance at a mineral oil price point — the right specification for mining haul truck fleets, heavy transport and agricultural equipment operating conditions where fully synthetic axle oil is not required.
Broad OEM Coverage
Meets API GL-5 — accepted across the widest range of heavy-duty truck, commercial vehicle and off-highway equipment OEM specifications requiring API GL-5 axle and final drive gear lubricant. One product covering mixed heavy fleet requirements.
Recommended Applications
Mining Haul Truck Final Drives
Final drives and axles on Cat, Komatsu, Bell and Liebherr haul trucks operating fully loaded in high ambient temperatures in the Northern Cape — where 85W-140 provides the maximum film thickness at elevated sump temperatures that 80W-90 cannot match.
Heavy Towing & Drawbar Applications
Heavy transport vehicles, low-bed trailers and drawbar combinations where sustained high torque loads cause elevated axle temperatures requiring the heavier 85W-140 viscosity grade for adequate film protection.
Construction & Earthmoving Equipment
Axles and final drives on ADTs, graders, wheel loaders and compactors operating under sustained heavy load where OEM specifies SAE 85W-140 or where equipment is operating in high ambient temperature conditions.
Heavy Agricultural Equipment
Tractor axles and final drives on large agricultural tractors in heavy tillage, deep ploughing and heavy trailer drawbar operations across the Western Cape and Northern Cape farming regions where 85W-140 is OEM-specified.
Heavy-Duty Truck Axles
Rear axles on heavy-duty trucks, buses and commercial vehicles where OEM specifies SAE 85W-140 — particularly tanker trucks, flatbed trailers and vehicles operating at maximum GVM under sustained high ambient temperatures.
Initial Fill, Top-Off & Refill
Suitable for initial fill, topping-off and refilling of enclosed commercial drive axles and final drives specifying SAE 85W-140 — across mixed heavy fleet operations and mining site maintenance programmes.
Note: Mobilube HD 85W-140 is not recommended for applications requiring API GL-4 level performance, and is not intended for transmissions requiring engine oil or automatic transmission fluid.
