Mobil™ SHC 600 Series — Synthetic Gear & Bearing Oil

Mobil SHC 639

Exceptional Performance Synthetic Gear & Bearing Oil | ISO VG 1000 | DIN 51517-3

ISO VG 1000 PAO Synthetic AGMA 9005-F16 SEW-Eurodrive Approved Worm Gears · Slow-Speed Bearings

Product Overview

Mobil SHC 639 is an exceptional performance synthetic gear and bearing oil formulated from proprietary PAO base stocks for the most demanding enclosed gear and bearing applications. As the ISO VG 1000 grade in the Mobil SHC 600 Series, it is engineered for very slow-speed, very high-load applications — particularly high-ratio worm gearboxes, filled-for-life industrial gearboxes and heavily loaded slow-speed bearings where conventional mineral oils give unsatisfactory service life.

The very high ISO VG 1000 viscosity ensures adequate film thickness under extreme contact stress at very slow shaft speeds — conditions under which lower viscosity grades cannot maintain hydrodynamic lubrication. The synthetic PAO base stock delivers a viscosity index of 184, outstanding oxidation resistance (RPVOT 2,500 minutes, TOST 10,000+ hours), a pour point of -42°C and up to 3.6% energy efficiency improvement vs equivalent mineral oils in worm gearbox applications.

Note: Mobil SHC 639 has an orange colour, distinguishing it visually from mineral gear oils and from the clear Mobilgear 600 XP Series. This aids identification during maintenance. Always confirm the required ISO VG grade from the gearbox nameplate before ordering.

Key Performance Benefits

Extreme Load Capacity at Very Low Speed

ISO VG 1000 viscosity provides the thick protective film required in very slow-speed, very high-torque applications — maintaining hydrodynamic lubrication where lower viscosity grades enter the boundary lubrication regime and suffer accelerated wear.

Worm Gear Efficiency — Up to 3.6% Improvement

The low traction coefficient of the PAO base stock reduces fluid friction in the sliding contact zone of worm gears — the gear type with the highest internal friction losses. Up to 3.6% energy efficiency improvement vs mineral equivalents in worm gearbox testing.

Exceptional Oil Life

RPVOT of 2,500 minutes and TOST of 10,000+ hours — among the best oxidation resistance results available in any industrial gear oil. Critical for filled-for-life gearboxes and remotely located equipment where oil change-out is difficult or impossible without extended shutdown.

Wide Temperature Range

Viscosity index of 184 and pour point of -42°C — exceptional for a VG 1000 grade. Ensures reliable cold-start lubrication in remote or cold-climate applications while maintaining adequate film thickness at elevated operating temperatures without viscosity thinning.

Shear Stability

Virtually no viscosity loss under mechanical shear in heavily loaded gear and high-shear bearing applications — maintaining ISO VG 1000 protection across the full service interval, unlike thickened mineral oils which can shear down and lose viscosity grade.

Rust, Corrosion & Water Resistance

Passes ASTM D665 Procedure B rust test. Excellent demulsibility, foam control and air release performance — essential for worm gearboxes and bearing housings operating in wet or humid environments where water contamination is a risk.

Typical Applications

Mobil SHC 639 is specified for very slow-speed, very high-load enclosed gear and bearing applications where ISO VG 1000 is OEM-specified and where conventional mineral oils give unsatisfactory service life. It is particularly effective where maintenance costs are high due to difficult access or production criticality:

Worm Gearboxes

High-ratio worm reducers in conveyors, packaging lines, hoisting equipment and industrial drives · Filled-for-life worm gearboxes where conventional oil change intervals are impractical · Low-efficiency worm gears where energy savings from synthetic lubrication are commercially significant

Mining & Heavy Industry

Very slow-speed mill pinion and trunnion drives · Large rotary kiln gear drives · Mine winder auxiliary gearboxes · Bucket elevator drives · Heavy crusher feeder gearboxes where ISO VG 1000 is nameplate-specified

Slow-Speed Bearings

Mixer roll bearings and roll neck bearings operating at high temperatures · Heavily loaded plain and rolling contact bearings at very slow speeds · Severe centrifuge bearing applications including marine centrifuges · Large trunnion bearings on rotating drums

Remote & Difficult Access Applications

Remotely located gearboxes where oil change-out requires extended production shutdown · Elevated or inaccessible gearboxes where drain interval extension directly reduces maintenance cost and safety risk · Plastic calenders and other process machinery with high change-out cost

When is ISO VG 1000 the correct choice? ISO VG 1000 is specified by the gearbox OEM for very slow-speed, high-load conditions where a lower viscosity grade cannot maintain adequate film thickness. It is most commonly encountered in high-ratio worm gearboxes and very large, slow-running industrial drives. Never substitute a lower viscosity grade for ISO VG 1000 without explicit OEM approval — doing so risks inadequate film thickness and accelerated wear. Contact Orbit Industrial with your gearbox nameplate data if you are unsure.
