Mobil™ Synthetic Industrial Gear Oil
Mobilgear SHC 320
Fully Synthetic PAO Industrial Gear Oil | ISO VG 320 | DIN 51517-3
Product Overview
Mobilgear SHC 320 is a fully synthetic PAO (polyalphaolefin) industrial gear oil engineered for exceptional performance in enclosed gear drives requiring ISO VG 320 lubrication. Formulated from synthetic base fluids with exceptional oxidation and thermal properties, it delivers outstanding protection against micropitting and scuffing, extended oil life under extreme conditions and superior performance across a wide operating temperature range — capabilities that mineral gear oils at the same viscosity grade cannot match.
Heavily loaded, slower-speed enclosed gearboxes requiring ISO VG 320 where the operating conditions — high load, elevated temperature, case-hardened gearing or extended drain intervals — exceed what a mineral gear oil can reliably deliver. The natural synthetic upgrade from Mobilgear 600 XP 320 for severe duty applications.
The high viscosity index of 181 — compared to 96-97 for Mobilgear 600 XP mineral — means Mobilgear SHC 320 maintains a more stable viscosity across operating temperature changes, providing reliable film protection from cold startup through to elevated operating temperatures without the viscosity thinning that limits mineral gear oil performance in high-temperature applications.
Mobilgear SHC 320 vs Mobilgear 600 XP 320
— Viscosity Index: 97
— FZG Scuffing: Stage 12+
— Max operating temp: 100°C
— Standard drain intervals
— Lower upfront cost per litre
— Viscosity Index: 181 (significantly higher)
— FZG Scuffing: Stage 14+ (maximum)
— Wider temperature operating range
— Extended drain intervals — reduces oil consumption and change-out labour
— Superior micropitting & scuffing protection for case-hardened gearing
Key Performance Benefits
Micropitting & Scuffing Protection
FZG micropitting Stage 10 / High and FZG scuffing Stage 14+ (exceeding the 12+ of Mobilgear 600 XP). Critical for heavily loaded, case-hardened gear tooth metallurgies where micropitting is the primary failure risk.
Extended Oil Life
Exceptional resistance to oxidation and thermal degradation enables extended drain intervals — reducing oil consumption, oil change labour costs and production interruptions for draining and filling large-sump gearboxes.
Wide Temperature Range
Viscosity Index of 181 — substantially higher than mineral equivalents — delivers stable viscosity across temperature extremes. Pour point of -48°C enables reliable cold startup in remote, high-altitude and cold-climate mining operations without oil heating.
Low Traction & Energy Efficiency
Inherently low traction properties of the PAO base stock reduce fluid friction in the load zone of gear contacts and rolling element bearings — producing lower operating temperatures and measurable energy savings across large gearbox fleets.
Corrosion & Water Resistance
Outstanding rust and corrosion protection even in the presence of seawater contamination — a key advantage for marine, offshore and coastal mining applications. Excellent demulsibility prevents water-in-oil emulsification that compromises lubricant performance.
Seal & Filter Compatibility
Outstanding compatibility with elastomeric seals reduces leak risk. No tendency to plug fine filters even when wet — reducing filter change frequency and associated maintenance costs in continuous-operation industrial gearboxes.
Typical Applications
Mobilgear SHC 320 is recommended where the gearbox OEM specifies ISO VG 320, AGMA 6 EP or DIN 51517-3 CLP 320, and where operating conditions justify a synthetic formulation:
Mining — Crusher & Conveyor Drives
Crusher drive gearboxes under high shock loading · Large conveyor head drives under heavy sustained load · Bucket wheel and stacker/reclaimer gearboxes on extended drain programmes · Processing plant heavy-duty drives in high-ambient-temperature environments
Manufacturing & Processing Plants
Heavy-duty extruder and press gearboxes · Steel mill and rolling mill auxiliary drives · Paper and pulp mill gearboxes under sustained load · Rubber and plastics processing drives requiring optimum oil life
Case-Hardened Gearing
Gearboxes with surface-hardened (case-hardened) gear tooth metallurgies where micropitting is the primary failure risk — modern Flender, SEW and Nord high-power-density gearboxes where mineral gear oil may not provide adequate micropitting protection
Remote & Temperature-Critical Applications
Remote mining sites with large diurnal temperature variation · Equipment with no oil heating where cold-start fluidity is critical · High-altitude operations — pour point of -48°C ensures reliable startup in all South African climatic conditions
