Mobil SHC™ Gear Series — Supreme Performance Synthetic Gear Oil
Mobil SHC™ Gear 6800
Supreme Performance Synthetic Gear & Bearing Oil | ISO VG 6800 | Extreme High Viscosity
Highest Viscosity Grade — Extreme Boundary Lubrication
Mobil SHC Gear 6800 is the ISO VG 6800 grade in ExxonMobil's SHC Gear series — the highest viscosity synthetic gear oil in the range, for the most extreme slow-speed, high-load and high-temperature enclosed gear and bearing applications where even ISO VG 3200 cannot maintain adequate film thickness.
ISO VG 6800 represents the upper limit of industrial gear oil viscosity — KV@40°C of 8,200 mm²/s. The viscosity index of 180 is higher than SHC Gear 3200 (165), reflecting the more highly refined PAO base stocks used to achieve this extreme viscosity while maintaining acceptable low-temperature fluidity (-6°C pour point). Specifically recommended for railroad DC traction motor drives and certain open gear applications such as oiling pinions or specially designed circulation systems.
Product Overview
Mobil SHC™ Gear 6800 is a supreme performance heavy-duty synthetic gear oil designed for the most extreme enclosed steel-on-steel gear drive and plain and rolling element bearing applications requiring ISO VG 6800. Formulated from synthetic base fluids with exceptional oxidation and thermal properties, it provides outstanding EHL film protection at very slow shaft speeds, very high loads and elevated operating temperatures — conditions where products of lower viscosity cannot maintain adequate film thickness.
The viscosity index of 180 — higher than SHC Gear 3200's VI 165 — provides excellent performance across a wide temperature range despite the extreme viscosity. The synthetic base stocks have inherently low traction properties that contribute to reduced fluid friction in the load zone, helping to improve gear efficiency and lower operating temperatures versus mineral oils of comparable viscosity.
Application note: Systems should be thoroughly cleaned and flushed when replacing a mineral product to achieve maximum performance benefits. Always confirm ISO VG 6800 is the correct specification from your OEM nameplate — not all slow-speed high-load applications require this extreme viscosity grade. Contact Orbit Industrial for application selection guidance.
SHC Gear 1500 / 3200 / 6800 — Grade Selection
All three grades use the same supreme performance synthetic formulation — select by ISO VG grade from your OEM nameplate
| Grade | ISO VG | KV@40°C | VI | Pour Point |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SHC Gear 1500 | 1500 | 1500 | 165 | -18°C |
| SHC Gear 3200 | 3200 | 3200 | 165 | -9°C |
| SHC Gear 6800 — This product | 6800 | 8200 | 180 | -6°C |
Always confirm the correct grade from your gearbox OEM nameplate or service manual before ordering.
Performance Benefits
Extreme Film Thickness at Lowest Speeds
KV@40°C of 8,200 mm²/s provides the maximum available EHL film thickness for applications operating at the very lowest shaft speeds and highest loads — the correct choice where ISO VG 3200 still gives inadequate film protection under the most extreme operating conditions.
Outstanding Load-Carrying & Anti-Wear
Proprietary additive combination provides excellent gear scuffing protection and anti-wear performance even in shock load situations. FZG Stage 13+ and four-ball weld load 250 kgf — consistent with SHC Gear 3200, confirming the extreme viscosity is matched by outstanding EP performance.
Higher VI Than SHC Gear 3200 — 180
VI 180 — higher than the 165 of SHC Gear 3200 — reflecting the more highly refined PAO base stocks used to achieve ISO VG 6800 viscosity while maintaining the widest possible operating temperature range and acceptable low-temperature behaviour for a product of this extreme viscosity class.
Low Traction — Reduced Operating Temperatures
Synthetic base stocks have inherently low traction properties — resulting in low fluid friction in the load zone of gears and rolling element bearings. Can help improve gear efficiency and lower operating temperatures, leading to lower operating costs versus mineral oils of equivalent viscosity grade.
Outstanding Thermal & Oxidation Resistance
Exceptional thermal and oxidative stability helps reduce lubricant consumption and change-out frequency — reducing product and change-out costs in applications where oil changes are costly and logistically difficult.
Light Colour — Easy Gear Inspection
Light colour helps avoid the need for gear cleaning prior to inspections — reducing maintenance costs and enabling visual gear tooth surface condition monitoring that is impossible with dark mineral or asphaltic products.
Recommended Applications
Suitable for both circulation and splash lubrication systems. Specifically for the most extreme slow-speed, high-load applications where lower viscosity grades cannot maintain adequate film thickness:
Industrial Enclosed Spur, Helical & Bevel Gears
Slow-speed and/or high-load enclosed industrial gear drives where ISO VG 6800 is OEM-specified — the most extreme applications where ISO VG 3200 is insufficient to maintain adequate EHL film thickness under the prevailing operating conditions
Plain & Rolling Element Bearings
Extreme slow-speed, high-load plain and rolling element bearing applications where maximum viscosity is required — particularly bearings operating at very slow surface speeds under sustained very heavy loads where boundary lubrication prevails
Railroad DC Traction Motor Drives
Railroad DC traction motor gear drives where ISO VG 6800 is specified — specifically noted in ExxonMobil documentation for the SHC Gear 3200 and 6800 grades
Certain Open Gear Applications
Certain open gear applications such as oiling pinions or specially designed circulation systems where ISO VG 6800 viscosity is required — enabling visual gear tooth inspection due to the light colour versus asphaltic open gear products
