ExxonMobil · Mobilube™ HD · Authorised Distributor — Western Cape & Northern Cape

Mobilube™ HD 85W-140 is a high-performance, heavy-duty gear lubricant formulated from high-performance base oils and an advanced additive system — engineered for the most heavily loaded axles, final drives and differentials where maximum film strength and extreme pressure protection are required. The heavier SAE 85W-140 grade delivers a thicker oil film at elevated operating temperatures than 80W-90 — making it the preferred specification for towing applications, fully loaded haul truck axles, high-torque agricultural equipment and hypoid gear applications where operating temperatures and loads are consistently at the high end. Recommended by ExxonMobil for applications requiring API GL-5 service. Available in 20L and 208L drum from Orbit Industrial — authorised Mobil distributor for the Western Cape and Northern Cape.

85W-140 vs 80W-90 — When to Specify the Heavier Grade

Grade Selection Guide

Specify 85W-140 when:

  • OEM specifies SAE 85W-140 or 90 grade
  • Towing or heavy drawbar applications
  • Fully loaded haul trucks in high ambient temperatures
  • High-torque low-speed applications requiring maximum film thickness
  • Axles running consistently hot under sustained high load

Specify 80W-90 when:

  • OEM specifies SAE 80W-90 grade
  • General on-highway and off-highway API GL-5 applications
  • Mixed temperature range operations
  • Lighter vehicle axles and final drives

Always confirm grade with your OEM handbook. Contact Orbit Industrial for application-specific grade selection assistance.

Features & Benefits

Maximum Film Thickness at High Temperature

The heavier SAE 140 high-temperature viscosity grade delivers a thicker, more robust oil film between hypoid gear teeth at elevated operating temperatures — providing greater protection against metal-to-metal contact in the most heavily loaded axle and final drive applications.

Excellent Chemical & Thermal Stability

Maintains oil integrity at elevated bulk oil temperatures in heavily loaded differentials, tandem axles and final drives — resisting oxidation, deposit formation and viscosity increase throughout the drain interval.

Outstanding EP Protection

Advanced EP additive system protects hypoid gear teeth under high-speed/shock load, high-speed/low-torque and low-speed/high-torque conditions — the critical loading scenarios that cause premature gear failure in towing, haul truck and heavy agricultural applications.

Outstanding Rust & Corrosion Protection

Demonstrated excellent rust protection in water-contaminated and wet conditions — protecting axle and drivetrain components in wet haul road, coastal agricultural and high-humidity mining environments.

High Flash Point — 224°C

High flash point provides a wide safety margin in hot running axle and final drive applications — reducing fire risk in enclosed drivetrain components operating at sustained high temperatures under heavy load.

Cost-Effective Mineral Performance

Delivers reliable API GL-5 performance at a competitive mineral oil price point — the right choice for high-load applications where operating conditions require a heavier grade but not necessarily a fully synthetic formulation.

Recommended Applications

Heavy Towing & Drawbar

Truck and commercial vehicle axles under sustained high-torque towing loads — where 85W-140 is specified by OEM for maximum film protection in high-load towing and drawbar applications.

Mining Haul Truck Axles

Rear axles and final drives on fully loaded Cat, Komatsu, Bell and Liebherr haul trucks where the OEM specifies 85W-140 for maximum operating temperature film strength in open pit mining.

Agricultural Equipment

Tractor axles and final drives, combine harvester drives and heavy agricultural equipment across the Western Cape and Northern Cape where 85W-140 is OEM-specified for heavy cultivation and harvesting loads.

Construction Equipment

Axles and final drives on graders, wheel loaders, compactors and ADTs operating in high-load construction applications where 85W-140 is specified by the OEM.

Hypoid Gears — High Load

Heavy-duty industrial and automotive hypoid gear applications operating consistently at the high end of the load and temperature range where 85W-140 provides better film protection than 80W-90.

Initial Fill, Top-Off & Refill

Suitable for initial fill, topping-off and refilling of enclosed commercial drive axles and final drives where SAE 85W-140 API GL-5 gear lubricant is specified.

Note: Mobilube HD 85W-140 is not recommended for applications requiring API GL-4 level performance, and is not intended for transmissions requiring engine oil or automatic transmission fluid. Always confirm grade with your OEM handbook.
