Product Overview
Mobil SHC 634 is an exceptional performance synthetic gear and bearing oil formulated from proprietary PAO base stocks for demanding enclosed gear and bearing applications requiring ISO VG 460 lubrication. ISO VG 460 is a widely specified heavy gear oil grade for slow-speed, high-load gearboxes — and Mobil SHC 634 delivers the full performance of the SHC 600 Series at this grade: Flender and SEW approval, FZG scuffing Stage 13+, FE8 roller wear of 2 mg, RPVOT 2,500 minutes, TOST oxidation life exceeding 10,000 hours, and a pour point of -45°C.
The PAO synthetic base stock provides a viscosity index of 174 — substantially higher than mineral gear oils at ISO 460 — delivering more stable viscosity across the operating temperature range, superior film protection at elevated temperatures and reliable cold-start lubrication in remote or outdoor equipment. Extended drain intervals achievable with Mobil SHC 634 directly reduce the frequency and cost of oil changes in slow-speed, high-load enclosed gearboxes where mineral oil life is limiting.
Note: Mobil SHC 634 has an orange colour, distinguishing it from mineral gear oils and the clear Mobilgear 600 XP Series. Always confirm your OEM's viscosity grade specification before ordering — ISO VG 460 is specifically required for slow-speed high-load applications where the heavier grade provides adequate film thickness at low shaft speeds.

FZG Stage 13+ & EP Protection
FZG scuffing Stage 13+ and FE8 roller wear of 2 mg — outstanding protection against gear scuffing and bearing wear under the high contact loads typical of slow-speed, high-ratio gearboxes. Protects gear tooth flanks and bearing surfaces under sustained maximum torque.
High Viscosity Index — 174
VI 174 maintains more stable viscosity across the operating temperature range — ensuring adequate film thickness at elevated gearbox sump temperatures in South African high-ambient-temperature mining environments, while providing reliable cold-start lubrication at low overnight temperatures.
Energy Efficiency
Low traction coefficient of the PAO base stock reduces fluid friction in gear contacts and rolling element bearing load zones — up to 3.6% energy efficiency improvement versus mineral equivalents in controlled worm gearbox testing. Meaningful savings in high-ratio, continuous-operation gearboxes.
Shear Stability
Virtually no viscosity loss under mechanical shear in heavily loaded gear and bearing applications — maintaining the ISO VG 460 film thickness throughout the extended drain interval, without the viscosity breakdown that causes increased wear in mineral oils operating beyond their designed drain interval.
Seal Compatibility
Generally compatible with most NBR, FKM and other elastomeric seal materials used with mineral oils — however, substantial variations in elastomer response are possible. Before converting a system to Mobil SHC 634, consult your equipment supplier or seal manufacturer to verify compatibility with specific seal materials in service.
