PAO Synthetic — Specifically Engineered for Refrigeration Compressors
Mobil Gargoyle Arctic SHC 226E is the ISO VG 68 grade in ExxonMobil's Gargoyle Arctic SHC 200 Series — a range of fully synthetic PAO refrigeration compressor oils specifically formulated for ammonia and carbon dioxide refrigeration systems, heat pumps and marine refrigeration where conventional mineral oils give unsatisfactory performance.
The wax-free PAO base stock provides outstanding resistance to thermal and oxidative degradation at the elevated temperatures of high-stage refrigeration compressors, combined with excellent low-temperature fluidity for very low evaporator temperature systems. Low miscibility with ammonia and carbon dioxide refrigerants results in higher oil film thickness in the presence of refrigerant under pressure — improving compressor protection and reducing shaft seal leakage compared to conventional refrigeration mineral oils.
Product Overview
Mobil Gargoyle Arctic SHC 226E is a fully synthetic superior performance refrigeration compressor oil formulated from wax-free polyalphaolefin (PAO) base stocks with outstanding resistance to thermal and oxidative degradation. At ISO VG 68, it is the intermediate viscosity grade in the SHC 200 Series — covering the broad range of reciprocating and rotary screw refrigeration compressors that specify ISO 68 viscosity grade, including ammonia industrial refrigeration, CO₂ screw compressors, heat pump applications and marine refrigeration systems.
The naturally high viscosity index (136) and wax-free composition of the PAO base stock provide excellent low-temperature fluidity without the waxy deposits that can block oil distribution lines, strainers and expansion devices in very low evaporator temperature systems. The low volatility of the PAO base stock also reduces the "light end stripping" effect that causes viscosity increase and deposit formation in conventional mineral refrigeration oils operating at high discharge temperatures.
Application note: Systems should be thoroughly flushed and cleaned when replacing a mineral product with Mobil Gargoyle Arctic SHC 226E. For systems using R22 refrigerant, guidance from the supplier of the refrigeration unit must always be sought to ensure compressor operation is suitable for efficient separation of oil and refrigerant. Do not mix with other refrigeration oils where the mixture may detract from performance.

The low volatility of the PAO base stock reduces the "light end stripping" effect that causes viscosity increase and oil consumption in conventional mineral oils operating at high discharge temperatures — maintaining consistent viscosity throughout the service interval.
Improved System Efficiency
Low traction coefficient of the PAO base stock offers potential for improved system efficiency and reduced power consumption in refrigeration compressor applications — contributing to improved evaporator efficiency through better separation characteristics.
Seal Compatibility
Good compatibility with seal materials used in refrigeration compressors — long seal life and reduced shaft seal leakage. Verify seal compatibility with your compressor OEM before converting from mineral oil, particularly where elastomer types are non-standard.

Ammonia Refrigeration Compressors
Both reciprocating and rotary screw compressor designs using ammonia (NH₃) refrigerant — the primary application where the low miscibility of SHC 226E with ammonia provides superior film thickness and shaft sealing versus mineral refrigeration oils that dissolve more readily in ammonia.
CO₂ Screw Compressors
Screw compressors using carbon dioxide (CO₂) refrigerant — where the low miscibility of Mobil Gargoyle Arctic SHC 200 Series with CO₂ makes it a suitable choice for CO₂ screw compressor lubrication in industrial, commercial and marine refrigeration systems.
Heat Pump Applications
Commercial, industrial and residential heat pump applications — where the combination of high discharge temperature performance, low refrigerant miscibility and long oil life provides superior service life versus mineral heat pump compressor oils.
Marine Refrigeration Systems
Commercial and marine refrigeration systems using ammonia or CO₂ refrigerant — including fishing vessel and cargo vessel refrigeration, cold store plant and marine heat pump systems where extended service intervals and thermal stability are required.
Refrigerant compatibility: Suitable for use with ammonia and carbon dioxide. Compatible with most common refrigerants except sulphur dioxide. Particularly successful in ammonia systems. For R22 refrigerant systems, seek guidance from your refrigeration unit supplier before converting.
