Grease Selection — What to Consider

Base Oil Viscosity

The base oil viscosity must match the bearing speed and load — not just the NLGI grade. Mobilith SHC 100 (ISO VG 100) is correct for electric motors. Mobilith SHC 460 (ISO VG 460) is correct for slow-speed heavy-load bearings. Using the wrong viscosity causes film failure or churning heat.

Thickener Compatibility

Never mix greases with different thickener types without purging the bearing housing. Lithium complex and polyurea thickeners are incompatible — mixing them causes rapid grease breakdown and bearing failure. When switching grease type, always flush the old grease out completely before refilling.

NLGI Consistency Grade

NLGI 2 is the standard grade for most industrial bearings and is compatible with standard grease guns. NLGI 1.5 provides better pumpability for remote or automatic lubrication systems. NLGI 3 is firmer — used for vertical shafts or high-speed bearings prone to throw-off. Always confirm OEM specification.
