EP2 Grease
EP2 grease refers to a grease with an NLGI 2 consistency — the most commonly used grade for general lubrication. It provides a balance between pumpability and staying in place, making it suitable for a wide range of equipment. EP2 describes consistency rather than performance level — in higher load or more demanding conditions, lithium complex or molybdenum-based greases are typically specified for improved protection.

What EP2 Means
EP2 grease refers to an extreme pressure grease with NLGI 2 consistency. The NLGI grade defines thickness rather than performance level — EP2 is the standard general-purpose grade used in most industrial applications.
EP1 vs EP2 vs EP3
The primary difference between NLGI grades is consistency. EP2 is the most commonly specified grade, balancing pumpability and retention in bearings. EP1 is softer and EP3 is firmer — both suit specific centralised lubrication systems.
When to Upgrade from EP2
More demanding environments such as mining, construction under shock loading, or high-temperature applications typically require lithium complex or molybdenum-based greases for improved protection beyond standard EP2.
